Question About Flat

Hi everyone.

I've inherited some money, and I plan to buy a property outright so I dont have to pay any rent or mortgage again.

However I only have enough to buy a one bed in my area.

I can't take out a mortgage, and I don't want to waste it on rent understandably. I cannot borrow any money from anyone to be able to buy a two bed.

I have a secondary school age child. I'm a single parent so only us two.

Am I legally allowed to turn the lounge into a bedroom, in order for us to have a bedroom each? And not bother having a lounge? The kitchen is in a separate room. It's not ideal, but it's all I can afford right now, and I can save up and eventually buy a two bed.

Thank you.

Yes of course.

You are maybe mixing up rules with bedrooms and council houses. But you can do what you like in a home you’ve bought.

Yes I think I am mixing them up.

Of course you can.

(If buying a flat, keep in mind there may be service charges so that things like roof repairs, drainage issue or external painting is covered and ideally there should be a sinking fund. (Sorry if you've already thought of that. My parents have a couple of flats in London...they've just been hit with a £12k bill for window replacements in one of them).

Ask any questions you have about particular flats or the process. There’s no many knowledgeable people on here.

May depend on the lease but probably ok if no alterations required. Is a sofabed an option?
