Changing notice period on contract

My boss had announced he’s changing the notice period in our contracts from 2 weeks to 8 weeks with no consultation or any other changes eg a pay rise. Can he do this?

No, but if you carry on working you must make it clear to your employer that you do not agree to the change, that you are working under protest and that you may take legal action if they don't resolve your concerns.

What exactly is the business?

For most people the notice period is the pay period ie weekly/monthly

I think increasing it is only in your favour. As an employer they will always have to pay that longer period but realistically they can't do anything if you chose to give less when you want to leave.
