Can anyone please advise how I can find out the outcome of a crown court trial (not local to me) which was due to start last Monday and last a week?

I know I’ve just phoned the court to ask but was asked what my connection was. However court cases are open to the public so imagine you have to be given that information if you ask

Yup, you can call up the crown court and ask. You will be asked your connection to the case and usually some clarifying security questions like the nature of the charges to ensure it's the right case and that you're given the information that can and should be given or if someone else like Witness Service should be informed that someone under their care has called to ask for information.

For a case that started on Monday and meant to last a week, it may have overrun or the jury may not be back yet, in which case you'll be told the case is ongoing and that you'll need to call back. If it's finished on the day you called, you may also be asked to call back either later that day or the next day as the outcome needs to finish getting through the system officially before it becomes public.
