HMRC changing name and address

Hello,

I am in a slight pickle that I wondered if anyone might know how to untangle. I got married in the last 5 years and changed my surname at work with payroll, the bank, electoral roll and on my passport. All household bills etc come to my married name also. My mobile phone is still in my maiden name.

I had not really considered my NI number. I have been paying NI through work (where name is changed).

I am trying to register for childcare tax credits (we are in Scotland so don’t have funded hours until term after 3) and I needed to put my name and then verify identity. I made the government gateway account in my married name. It then failed to verify my identify because I think my NI number is tied to my maiden name and possibly an old address.

I then went through a process of trying to verify with passport and a government app, which also failed as my passport is in married name…

I guess I have to call them up on Monday, but wondered if anyone else knows what to do as I anticipate the phone call might be slow…

Hi your name address would normally update through your work records, do you claim child benefit? That would also have updated your records, you’ll just have to ring I’m afraid but it will be easy to sort x

I had a similar issue. After I remarried I made my name double- barrelled to keep a link to my daughter who works at the same place. That meant my wage slip and NI was recorded as coming from this DB surname. However all other documentation has my singular, new surname. All good til I tried to get a forecast for my pension and the GG portal refused to acknowledge me.

Needless to say I immediately changed everything at work (right palaver with my work email) am now just known by the single surname and all is fine.

HMRC don't automatically update your name, you will have to contact them directly. I had to do this recently and it was a right faff. Call as soon as the lines open or you will be waiting ages. You can't do it online.
