How do I get a copy of my lost deed poll document? Urgent

lukins66 · 01/09/2025 18:18

Around 23 years ago, I changed my surname after divorce, back to my maiden name. I then remarried & changed my surname to my husbands.
I have been trying to apply for my enhanced DBS.
They require the deed poll of change of name back to my maiden name.
i can’t find it anywhere.
20 + years ago & several house moves!
Is there any way I can get a copy urgently please?
I can’t even remember the name of the solicitors that I used.
Can anyone help me please?

You don't need a deed poll to change a name after divorce, or revert back to your maiden name. I did mine on a stat dec but you don't need to formally.

I have several enhanced dbs and only show my divorce decree which has been sufficient for at least 6 dbs checks in the last 15 years.

Would you have given a copy to your GP surgery and has it been placed on record or in your file?

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 01/09/2025 18:33

I think your maiden name is yours forever, whether you use it or not. So you don’t need documentation for that, just your birth certificate I think.

DrCoconut · 01/09/2025 18:40

My name was changed as a child and the deed poll subsequently lost. It was not possible to get a copy. My first DBS was a nightmare but ultimately solved by the fact that I had a passport. I assume the change of name is on some kind of records system there from an earlier application. I was also advised that you can go to a solicitors and make a sworn statement (or something like that) that you had this deed poll and it can be accepted as proof. I have no idea about reverting to your birth name though as mine was a total change of name.

Thank you for all the replies.
i think because it was used in a previous DBS they require it for this one.
i didn’t use it at the GP surgery so it’s not on their file, but thanks for the thought.
Does anyone know if it shows on my passport? My passport needs to be renewed as it’s very out of date. I was hoping to do that soon but will do it now if that’s going to help.
Thanks for the divorce decree idea, it’s worth a try I suppose.
They are asking for my deed poll document asap, otherwise my DBS fee will be lost ☹️

Do you have your decree absolute? Can you use that?

Collaborate · 01/09/2025 23:38

Just write out a new one.

lukins66 · 01/09/2025 23:47

@Collaborate write out a new one?
sorry, please can you explain.

OP posts:
lukins66 · 01/09/2025 23:50

@WonderfulSmith Yes, I do have that and will try with that tomorrow, thanks.
However, they are asking for the Deed poll document asap.
Unfortunately, I can’t work without it.

They require the deed poll of change of name back to my maiden name.

Can’t you just say this is something that is not actually required to be done with a deed poll, you just start using your maiden name whenever you want? I know you had a document, but there was no legal need for it and why do they require something that is not legally necessary?

I’d be asking on the Legal Advice UK sub too.

lukins66 · 02/09/2025 00:19

Thanks @NoCommentingFromNowOn
I was given the advice 23years ago to revert back to my maiden name by deed poll.
Unfortunately, because the document was used in a previous DBS, they require it for my new one.
I will keep hunting. Going to blitz the boxes in the garage tomorrow, wish me luck with the spiders!

Ok. I do suggest the sub on Reddit though, they have solicitors on there.

@NoCommentingFromNowOn Many thanks for that. Very interesting.
Thanks for the link.

I am surprised anyone is asking for the deed poll. That suggests whoever is checking your ID doesn't understand the rules. However, as @Collaborate says, you can simply write out and sign a new change of name deed. Won't cost you anything.

AnxiousPenguin · 17/09/2025 08:59

Hello OP, I just wanted to know out of curiosity (I'm applying for an Enhanced DBS now as well), who do you mean by "they"? Is it the umbrella company or DBS itself is asking for this deed poll? Im so sorry I have no advice, but I have a non-english name and this kind of name thing stresses me out big time so I'm inevitably worried about my own DBS.

lukins66 · 17/09/2025 12:47

@AnxiousPenguin It is the agency that I’m in the process of applying to work for.
I can’t proceed any further until I find the lost deed poll document, it’s so frustrating.
they have now said that they will refund the cost of the DBS & I can sort it out myself.
I would like to think that if you can provide all of your legal documents, especially those that show a change of name, it shouldn’t cause any problems for you.
Good luck with your DBS, I hope it doesn’t give you anything to worry about.

Have you got an email copy saved as attachment to your previous application?

Shedmistress · 17/09/2025 13:03

Can you log into the DBS account and just update it so that it renews every year?

AnxiousPenguin · 17/09/2025 13:13

I'm extremely new to Mumsnet so I don't know how to reply directly to posts @lukins66

Ah my application is already with DBS itself. The umbrella company that did mine has queried my name before sending it to DBS itself, so I'd hope it is ok. Perhaps it might comfort you because I applied for a DBS before (2017) where my ID documents didn't entirely match (same names, different order of names due to being a non-english name). And my 5 year address history was mostly my home country and one student halls that was torn down by the time it was 2017. Still, I got a DBS but it took ages. Like months. But i still got it in 2017. So perhaps we're both in a better position now..? Completely baseless from me, I know, these things are extremely frustrating 😭 😭 x

lukins66 · 17/09/2025 13:24

@MrsMoastyToasty unfortunately not!
it was over ten years ago now.
Thanks for the thought though.

OP posts:
lukins66 · 17/09/2025 13:27

@Shedmistress My last DBS was over ten years ago. Unfortunately, I wasn’t on the update service.
If I ever get my new DBS, I will definitely make sure it’s on the update service.

lukins66 · 17/09/2025 13:34

@TheDayBeforeYouCame That is very interesting! Thank you so much. I was told that I couldn’t request a copy as they don’t keep them. This is different though.
I will investigate further. Many thanks!

I've had this. I explained it was lost and was advised to just sort a new deedpoll (the solicitors had gone out of business years ago).
All sorted.
