Cost to amend a will

My DH and I currently have a will. I am wanting to make a small change/addition to it. At the moment everything is left to our children if we die, I would like to add on that if our children pre decease us or die at the same time that the estate is left to a relative.

Does anybody know if this is easy enough to do and if it means rewriting the whole will? My DH seems to think it will cost us a lot of money as it will need re writing despite everything else staying the same.

Whoever wrote your will the first time around should have thought of this. It's standard stuff to ask what if x dies first. So whoever you use, I wouldn't go back to the first one.

I'm not a lawyer but I think this can be done as a form of appendix called a codicil. Shouldn't be too expensive. But if your will is fairly simple, it may be easier to just do it again.

Thanks, it is fairly simple and probably the standard way that most are advised to do. I will have to dig it out and see what it says exactly, I just had a panic that if something happened to all of us anything we had left would go to some obscure relative who we have no relationship with when we have relatives right here that would benefit from it.

I should also add, I’m happy to pay for the will again if that’s what it takes, my DH is saying it will be about £1000 which just seemed so expensive when only a small part of it was changing and it isn’t a complicated will to start with.

You may want to make provision for any grandchildren if your children have any children or if they don't exist now a provision could be made for them if they come along in the future. My will gives everything to my children and to their children if they pre decease me. If no grandchildren it goes to my brother.
