Experience with Law Ombudsman?

Long story short, my solicitor went way above the scope of what I asked for and had a set budget for which she knew about as the other party was footing costs to £xx amount. The cost was extortionate to read over a very non-contentious document and make one requested change (a sentence). She made loads of changes that were detrimental to my position and changed them back at my request. However something that should have cost less than £1200, cost about £4k, with her billing to use up all my money on account. When I raised the issue, she agreed to
waive her last bill to the tune of £400 - 2 months ago but I have not received that money either, despite chasing.

Is this law ombudsman territory and is anyone familiar with the process?

You need to use her firm's complaints procedure first, then go to the legal ombudsman if you still aren't satisfied

Have you checked the firm's complaints process and been through that? That should be your first port of call.

Thanks will do that

You do have to exhaust the firm's internal process first, otherwise the Ombudsman will not consider your complaint.

You may find this pdf useful from their website re costs best practice guidance: https://www.legalombudsman.org.uk/media/edbfylag/ombudsman-view-good-costs-service.pdf

That doesn't necessarily mean a complaint will go your way, but it can be a good place to start to work out what's 'expected' of the legal profession and where it seems they have fallen short.
