Debt agency ? Abuse

My father was a victim of financial abuse. She robbed 90 grand off my dad . He’s got dementia

she used to live with him, and he would give her money for gas and electric so she could pay it. Well she’s now been arrested and my dad’s in debt 1000 !!!!! She’s not been paying it ;(

British Gas don’t care and has passed it to a debt agency. Does my dad have to pay it or not? I’m not sure how he will afford it as he’s 71 and not got much money but does he have to pay it or not plz? Thanks

Your dad will have to pay British Gas yes and the rest of it is a police matter obviously
and that’s gonna take a long long time. To minimise stress, I’d just pay the gas bill for now.

IamSmarticus · 24/03/2025 11:14

IANAL but I would say yes, he has used the gas/electric so needs to pay for it. I realise that he thought he was paying the 3rd party to pay it for him but she didn't and so he still owes it.

Phone them on his behalf.
If the supply was to his home and in his name he owes the money.
If he no longer has capacity they may be willing to write off all or some of amount owed, but you could also offer a repaymemt plan of a small amount per week/month
Read below as he may be able to get a grant:

Good luck with British gas biggest load of .

Make an appointment with Citizens Advice Bureau immediately. They were absolutely amazing helping me sort out an energy dispute. They will be able to get to the right people. I’m so sorry this happened to your poor dad, some people are utterly evil.

Why would it not be payable? BG haven't done anything wrong

notapizzaeater · 24/03/2025 16:45

But he does owe it to BG - has he involved the police for stealing his money ?

WeeOrcadian · 24/03/2025 19:38

Assuming that because the police are involved, there may be something BG can offer / do

Is there any prospect of getting any money back from her?
