My friend travel to Turkey for under eye surgery, it was meant to be a 1 hour procedure he was down for 4 hours then ended up putting under for the procedure, within 4 hours afterwards he became seriously poorly. 3 hospitals later he was admitted to ICU his kidneys have failed and he’s got a major infection. Has anyone been through this or know any advice? Someone said to post it in legal but it’s not just legal advice it’s health as well and recovery.

What have his insurance company said?

Peasnbeans · 20/03/2025 00:05

Have the people with him contacted the British Consulate in Turkey?

Bromptotoo · 20/03/2025 07:25

Were they insured? Was the trip self organised or arranged through a provider with a presence in the UK?

I assume you'd need more than travel insurance if you elect to go abroad for elective surgery of this type.

If all else fails then UK Embassy/Consulate but they're not always sympathetic to cases where they might think there is an element of 'author of own misfortune' .

Very unlikely that travel insurance would cover traveling abroad for an elective surgery, unless he's taken out a policy specifically with that in mind (or one came with the procedure).

There's jot much advice we can give. He is in ICU and needs to follow their advice for recovery. Hopefully he's in the right hospital now. No other intervention is possible at this stage as he can't travel home so he just needs to hope he's getting the right care locally.

My friend has just been to Turkey for a tummy tuck - she had to take special insurance out just in case there were complications- did they ? Hope he’s doing better.

Why do people keep going to Turkey for surgery. It's madness!!!!!

Hoppinggreen · 20/03/2025 20:05

I hope your friend recovers well but I have no idea how the Legal Section of a British website can help with a medical issue in Turkey
