Contentious probate solicitor not replying to our solicitor's letter

We no longer use a solicitor due to costs but 3 months ago he wrote to the other side's solicitor. There was a letter back acknowledging our solicitor's letter saying he was waiting for his client to get back to him.our solicitor chased this up after several weeks and then more recently we have chased this up ourselves after deciding not to use a solicitor. He says he'll reply but doesn't so that after 3 months we have not had any reply that tells us anything. He won't even confirm if he is still representing his client. His client claims not to have had the letter but we know from other family members that he has because he has discussed the contents with them.
What can we do to move this forward?

The delay is almost certainly caused by the client, not the solicitor. Without knowing what this is about, it is impossible to advise how you can move this forward.
