Hi ,
Can I just ask if anyone here has refused to pay their Legal aid bill (statutory charge) due to poverty and what happened as a result?

The Statutory Charge can be waived in certain circumstances, usually in cases where imposing it would cause excessive hardship, though the threshold for this is high. Otherwise they’ll expect you to set up an instalment plan. Currently the Statutory Charge incurs interest of 8% per annum which will begin to accrue at the point that the Legal Services Commission receives the final claim from the solicitor and the claim is processed. If you “refuse” to pay it will be pursued through legal channels with the eventual possibility of a court judgement.
