Can I request a refund?

I stayed in a hotel for two nights and a number of things went wrong. I complained to the hotel and they validated my complaint and said in writing that the things I complained about did happen. They offered me a free one night stay at the hotel but I’m not keen to go back because it was bad, plus it’s miles away and I’m not planning to go back to the area.

Do I have any grounds to request a refund? Or a partial refund? Or should I just take the one night stay because it’s better than nothing?

I had similar once and despite validating the complaint and moving rooms, they said no. I paid with my credit card so asked them to refund and they said we it wasn't advertised as "good nights sleep" or the like, it was just one of those things.

I suppose it depends on what they validated and what you complained about.

Blasting music till 2am despite me having called in advance to say I was travelling with a disabled child and wanted to check it was suitable before I booked. Pool closed. Drunk guests fighting and looking in my bedroom window. Clouds of smoke around the door and staff weren’t stopping it. Issues with the restaurant food.

They agreed that all of this happened and offered a free night‘s stay to replace the bad night I had. But I’d have to drive over a hundred miles to use it, and I’m not keen to return.

I’ve dropped them an email asking if they can refund for one night instead of a free night. I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect me to travel 150 miles so they can have another attempt at doing it right?
