Next of kin

Can someone advise? Do I have to act as Next of Kin for a relative even if I am the only person who is alive and related to them? They are pretty unpleasant anyway, and we have no relationship with them. However, as they age and are having issues it is clear that friends and the system seem to think legally I should be notified and involved.

Can I refuse? I really don't want to be drawn into something that involves a whole heap of responsibility for someone I don't like (and does not like me) even though they have named me as next of kin on medical records etc.

No you do not. You could contact the organisations involved and ask them to remove your personal details from this person's record
