Debt from divorce

Last night, my friend was telling me how high her solicitor's bill is currently from her divorce. Her husband hasn't cared because he has money to throw at it.

I know solicitors are expensive and divorce is expensive too. I just wonder how anyone can afford it!

A divorce costs less than £600 on line. I assume he’s being an arse about finances.

There are ways to keep it down:

  • draft letters / witness statements yourself
  • instruct your lawyer not to respond to everything - the ex’s MO may be to run down funds
  • make sure you have instigated a court timetable then he will have to engage promptly
in the end it will come out in the wash. I was given 80% of assets. The judge very clearly took into account my ex’s vexatious litigation approach

The divorce itself is not the expensive bit. It’s the untangling of the finances, particularly after years of enmeshment. I had three lawyers dealing with various aspects - in hindsight maybe some money could have been saved, but I was in no fit state to sort things myself and no idea about the legals. I’m still financially compromised (higher earner, have assets, etc). It was fucking worth it to get free of the lying, cheating narc!
