mum died last year, and she left the house in trust for me to live here. Utility company now want a document to prove it eg a "tenancy agreement" or other property agreement. What on earth do i give them, as i am not a "tenant"? I should say I looked after mum as sole carer and lived here for years, and paid the electricity bill from my account.

@spirited101 I'm assuming you have a solicitor. They should be able to provide you with a document that names you as beneficiary and gives the address of the house, if you don't have such a document already. I'm not a solicitor so I don't know what such a document is called 🙄

A copy of the relevant page of your Mother's will and the grant of probate should be sufficient.

thanks, I'll have to get on to them, I must admit I didn't want to cos of charges but I don't know what to give the company and hoping the solicitor should know. Thanks to both for your reply.

You don't need to give them anything. They won't cut you off becuase you can't provide a document.

Ignore them and pay the bills??

spirited101 · 26/06/2024 16:33

thanks brom, will ring sol tomorrow and see what they say.

Surely you have a copy of her will ? Just photo copy the relevant part showing you named as beneficiary to the home . Email them that !

Are the utility bills still in your mum's name?

Brendabigbaps · 27/06/2024 11:27

Unless it’s some fancy contract just tell them your taking over the property and the bills are to be sent in your name.
