DH is being threatened with a charge against his half of our property from an old debt from abroad. I'm panicking ... can they take our house even though I knew nothing about this? House in joint names and no mortgage.

The key word is threat. Without a court order the person/company can't do anything.

I'm not a lawyer but I'd also question whether a debtee from abroad can start proceedings in the UK or the debt was not incurred here. I'd be interested to hear from someone who knows on this point.

I'm assuming the debt is a large one? Best thing to do is if he owes it, you can either take out a small mortgage to repay or offer monthly payments to pay it off
