Will the bank pay a funeral bill?

A family friend has died and no close family has the money to pay for the funeral. They’ve been told that if they take the bill to the deceased person’s bank they’ll pay it. They’re certain that they’ll have enough money in their account

Is this right?

The family who's relative has died. Its in the OP.

OP, yes the bank should pay. But maybe check with them first.

Yes they should do this for you. Contact the bank & check what they need. It was definitely an option for us for my MiL recently.
Sorry for your loss.

The bank won’t pay But they will be prepared to release funds from the dead person’s account to pay for the funeral.

Yes they will pay the funeral directors directly.

Sorry for your loss

Do they have a will? If so then the solicitor dealing with the probate will arrange payment as part of the probate process

Yes , with as funeral costs can be paid out the deceased persons estate. I'm not sure who paperwork is required.

Scottishdreams1991 · 19/05/2024 20:33

Yeah that's what we did for our mum. We had to show a invoice and the bank wrote a cheque for it. She didn't have enough but he wrote what she had in her account.
Bank of Scotland btw

They will pay it directly as long as the invoice has payment details on it. Undertakers will send invoiced directly to banks too.

Yes a bank will release available funds to pay funeral costs.

You will need an invoice from the funeral directors, and the bank will pay them directly.

You dont need a solicitor for probate, so there may not be a solicitor at all. We did the probate for all our parents and im sure the bank either paid the funeral home directly or released the funds.

Thank you everyone

They will be very relieved to hear this, much appreciated

The bank will pay the undertakers directly once they send a bill. Only the funeral costs though, not flowers or the wake. This happened when my brother died.

Yes, it’s true you don’t need to use a solicitor but quite a few people do. Most originals of wills etc. are with a solicitor
