Overseas executor?

I’ve had a quick look but can’t see an immediate answer.

If we choose two executors of our will who currently both reside overseas, is that an issue? I believe both may still have UK bank accounts and are both definitely UK citizens.

Shouldn’t be a problem. It can’t be that uncommon. My dad was living in Asia when he was executor for my Nan here in the U.K.. He just flew in to sign papers for a few days after the funeral.

You can use who you like as executor, but think hard about the logistics of this. The executor will need to contact banks, possibly lenders, pension companies etc etc. if they are not in the U.K., and possibly in a different time zone that will be difficult. Also, if they both live overseas they will also need to communicate with each other. It’s just another layer of complexity.

And as the PP said, they might have to travel to sign papers. The cost of the travel, and other reasonable expenses will come from your estate, meaning your beneficiaries will receive less.

Appointing an executor who lives in the U.K. might be simpler.
