Harassment advice

Afternoon,

I was wondering if anyone knows the laws around electoral roll privacy?

A colleague of mine was recently sacked. He is an elected councilor in another constituency to where I live. My partner has been getting social media harassment from him. We are worried as the only place their name would have been linked to mine is on the electoral roll.

Are councilors allowed to access address data to see who lives at an address even if they are not elected in that borough council area?

I didn’t want to complain to the council but feel there is mistreatment of data for their own use which is not appropriate.

The electoral roll is available at the local library. Anyone can look at it.

Spirallingdownwards · 27/04/2024 16:46

Unless you asked for it not to be publicly available then anyone can access the electoral register.

As above. It's public information

Google 192.com . You can ask to be taken off the public register by contacting your local council.

Your partner should report the harassment to the police.

My understanding is that the open register is one that companies can buy.

I am not on the open register and nor is DH, but the electoral roll at our library has us both listed, as well as all my colleagues who are also not on the open register.

Thanks, yes not been on the open register for a few years but still seem to show on 192 if someone buys it.

The full register is available to anyone to view in person at your council offices, even if you’ve asked to be taken off the Open register. That just prevents your data being sold for marketing.

But that doesn’t mean it’s not harassment, which needs reporting.

I have canvassed for a political party and you can get electors info online so you can see who is at the address. This could have been accessible to the councillor in their role.
