Dad’s money

My dad has roughly £25k in his bank account. No other assets (lives in council house). I have one sister. Does dad have to make a will for my sister and I to receive this money after his death or will he need to make a will? We live in Scotland. Thank you for reading.

Sorry, I meant to say ‘does dad need to make a will or will we receive the money without having to make a will’.

If he does not have a living wife or civil partner, you and your sister will inherit under the rules of intestacy if he does not make a will.

In England not having a will changes the process to acquire his assets after he dies, but for a small estate it isn't complicated and doesn't have to be completed by a solicitor. I expect there are similar arrangements in Scotland.
