Son having car insurance cancelled

Shivvyw · 29/01/2024 22:13

Hi, can anyone advise me . My son has had notification to say his car insurance is getting cancelled as did not declare modifications. The modifications that I know of are tinted widows & maybe a change of spoiler ( I’m not 100% sure as we bought as is) I did not realise that these had to be declared as I stupidly thought was only things like changing performance of the car like exhaust , engine etc. My question is if I cancel the insurance before they do which will be 05/02/24 do I still have to declare had insurance cancelled? Just thinking as they said they are cancelling will this already be on his record so to speak?

Yes you do. Insurance contracts are "of utmost good faith". Best of luck getting any cover.

CaptainCachitoo · 29/01/2024 22:38

Cancelling the insurance policy before the insurer does may not necessarily erase the fact that the policy was cancelled. Insurance companies often report cancellations to a shared database, and future insurers may check this database when underwriting a new policy.

Shivvyw · 29/01/2024 22:49

Thanks For your reply . I keep reading different things most saying to cancel yourself . It was a genuine error ( I know that’s not a good enough reason ) but not even offered to re quote the Insurance.

How did the modifications come to light?

Shivvyw · 30/01/2024 08:27

I have no idea how flagged up . Don’t get me wrong I would rather know now but just worrying now about the canx . Just want to know where I stand if I cancel myself before they do on 5th

Is it worth speaking to them to see if it can be reinstated? It is very strange that they have found out - usually this only comes to light if you make a claim.

PickledPurplePickle · 30/01/2024 08:36

Have you spoken to the insurance company to explain?

Muststopeating · 30/01/2024 08:37

Insurance companies send reps to places like college car parks etc to do random checks on cars. They've been doing it for years, my brother got caught out like this because apparently his wheels were slightly different sized (also bought car like that) from original. That was 15 years ago.

I would phone the insurance company, tell them it was an honest mistake and ask them if they would revoke the cancellation if you cancel yourself. They might, they might not. But it's worth a try because if it's cancelled he'll have to declare that forever more!

Good luck!

FiveShelties · 30/01/2024 08:43

@Muststopeating - I had no idea that happened.

It’s possible that they don’t insure for modifications. A lot don’t. So likely that the policy has been cancelled due to the fact they wouldn’t have taken on the risk had the mods been declared at the outset.

Usually if an insurer does cover mods they will apply a retrospective increase to the premium when these are declared.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 30/01/2024 08:46

Possibility they compared it to the insurance the car had previously where the mods were declared
Having worked in insurance I would say tell him to call them and see what he can negotiate

Bromptotoo · 30/01/2024 08:52

Some are very fussy about mods. Years ago I had a Peugeot 205, diesel engine and base trim. A previous owner had fitted a steering wheel for the GTi version.

One well advertised company refused to quote for that reason.

As others say see what he can negotiate.

Shivvyw · 30/01/2024 09:32

Thanks all . We did speak to them briefly yesterday but was difficult as we’re at work . I think I will call them again to see if I can cancel myself . Insurance is extortionate as it is so really want to try to avoid having to pay even more. Really appreciate all your advise . I just need to call them again I think as it’s really playing on my mind & worrying me .

And don't drive until this is resolved because if he has to make a claim it's likely it won't be covered and you might find yourself with a huge bill, (happened to a friend's son - same thing - modifications).

Shivvyw · 30/01/2024 19:09

Thanks for the advice. Do you know if your friend canx the insurance themselves before the 7days & if so was this was still classed as cnx insurance?

I would suggest starting your own thread, @Nics2024

Nics2024 · 08/04/2024 09:20

Ok sorry new to this cant wirk it out

Favouritefruits · 08/04/2024 09:22

I’m afraid you’ve had it with normal car insurance now, if you’ve had a policy cancelled no other company will touch you. You need special insurance now which will be ££££. What a silly boy

savoycabbage · 08/04/2024 09:26

Did it say why they were cancelling it in the letter?

If not has he called them to ask?

Sjwuk · 25/09/2024 22:53

Hi can I ask did u cancel before the 7 days, and did it ‘work’? My son is now in similar position
