I work in a pub, which for various reasons, is struggling.

Sometimes, of an evening if it's not busy, the owner will close early, cutting my shift short by a couple of hours.

Now, I totally get why they do this - costs them more to stay open than they make - but the staff only get paid what they work, so are losing money.

This is now becoming a more regular occurrence, so I was wondering - is the owner legally obliged to pay us for our rostered hours, or only the hours we work? There is a roster which is published weekly for the staff.

Can anyone with any sort of employment law knowledge advise please?

what does your contract say?

pulka · 07/11/2023 11:18

How many hours are you contracted for?

Dexterwontstopfarting · 07/11/2023 11:23

Ha! There is no contract. My own feeling is that we only get paid for what we work.
It doesn't affect me (I'm retired so also have a pension) but some of the younger ones rely on their hours.

Thanks for answering so quickly, by the way!

You're on a zero hour contract then. You get paid for the hours you work. You're employer isn't doing anything wrong.

SleepingisanArt · 07/11/2023 11:27

That's the zero hours contract which is very common in hospitality. They are not obliged to pay you for hours you don't work. It sounds as though there won't be any pay soon......

Dexterwontstopfarting · 07/11/2023 11:30

That's what I thought.
And you're right, I'm looking for something else already!!
Thank you all
