I come across a number of words relating to criminal law at work and there are a few I am unsure of their meaning. Being too embarrassed to ask at work, I was hoping the good people of MN could assist.

Could you please explain to me in the simplest of terms, a meaning or description of the following;

  • Indictment
  • Copy complaint
  • Libelled (ie indictment libelled a charge)
  • Summary proceedings
  • Solemn proceedings (and an example of a crime that would fall under these)
  • Substantive crime
  • Petition (appear on petition, petition warrant)
  • Undertaking

Thank you!

Google "online dictionary of Scots law"

I’d prefer if someone was able to explain them in simple terms, as sometimes the legal definition isn’t clear to me
