Neighbour from Hell

Hi, I am looking for advice on what steps I can take about my neighbour who has terrorised me for 8 years.

It all started in 2015 when I was sexually assaulted by my neighbour and I reported him to the police and to the council who have both done nothing to help. Since 2015 I have had him kick my front door in on 2 separate occasions and cause significant damage to the wall in my hallway. He has subjected me to homophobic abuse, I've had eggs thrown at my front door, feces smeared over the front door. I have also been assaulted by him as I am heading out the door. Every incident has been reported but nothing has been done.

I am 33 soon to be 34 next month and I have severe Anxiety disorder and severe depression which I was diagnosed with at 16. I am also on the autism spectrum with Aspergers Syndrome.

I have been on the waiting list to move for 5 years and no effort has been made by the council or the police to get me moved.

I have recently completed a housing application to move 50 miles away to a totally different area to be closer to my father, siblings and other family.

I did have family here but that relationship was toxic and there hasn't been any family support here.

Due to my neighbour I have also attempted suicide on 5 separate occasions as a last resort.

If anyone has any advice regarding what steps I can take to get something done about the vile individual next door I would appreciate it.

Thank you

I’m sorry you’re going through such terrible difficulties. I imagine that the police haven’t taken more action because there was no proof? Is that what you’ve been told? Could you install a ring camera so there is evidence of any future problems?

You could also contact a local councillor to get help from them. You can get details of your councillors online and send them an email. Some are more helpful than others so pick a few names and if you don’t get a positive response, try another.

It sounds a good idea to move away but obviously there will be waiting lists for housing in your new area. Your housing department should be able to give you information or a contact in the housing department in your new area.

Are you receiving help with your mental health? Your GP should have referred you to specialist support. It sounds as if you have pre-existing anxiety made worse by your neighbour’s actions and a mental health support worker should be helping you with this. Tell your councillor about these issues so they can highlight it when dealing with your housing.

It’s very difficult to think clearly or plan ahead when you’re so anxious so ask for help in making a plan of what you can do. Your mental health worker should help you with this.

I hope you’re able to start to improve things for you.
