Car insurance query

I'm not sure whether there's a more suitable board to post this - happy to get it moved if so.

DD is 17 and we're looking for cheap cars. We've found a variety in our budget, mostly Ford Fiestas, a few KA's, a Polo and a Mini.

The Mini is proving to be the cheapest - a 1.4 diesel. Low emissions so no tax. All the others are approx £180 a year tax.

What I can't get my head around is the insurance. I was expecting 4 figures but the price for a fully comprehensive, legal cover and breakdown is coming in at between £290 and £400!

My question is this: I've put my and DH's names on the policy as additional drivers. Should DD have any reason to need to use that insurance, does it affect my and DH's own policies?

Wow, that's cheap? Where about do you live?

I used to work in insurance.

Im assuming for that price she still has a provisional licence? If that’s the case then expect the price to shoot up massively when she passes her test.

With you and your husband being named drivers, this won’t affect your policies unless you have an accident whilst driving her car. In which case you’d have to declare that you’ve had an accident.
