Payment from will by cheque?

Family member (married to v. controlling and domineering husband) said she wanted to receive payment from a willl ASAP but also stipulated that the payment was made by cheque and not by bank transfer. Any thoughts as to why someone would request this? My immediate thought was because the husband didn't want the family to know the end destination of payment but pure speculation.

Perhaps she wants to put it in a secret running away account. Doing a bank transfer gives away her secret to too many people as you will know the account number.

Doesn’t do online banking?

Mosaic123 · 04/06/2023 01:06

Possibly:

Bank account is in overdraft and they can put this cheque into a different account rather than paying off an overdraft?

Pushes them over the savings limit for claiming benefits so they are going to try and hide this inheritance?

Could be 100 reasons!

It was more than likely the husband who demanded this.

Definitely does do online banking.

I think you can say no to this - doesn't it need to go into an account which is named of the benefactor?

Plus no one issues cheques now!!!!

This is the ideal scenario sadly

Paying by cheque would guarantee the money goes in to an account in the beneficiaries name, as you can only pay a cheque in to an account with the same name ....

It is normal for cheques to be used to distribute inheritance payments

Itsanotherhreatday · 04/06/2023 09:44

I don’t see an issue - inheritance belongs to the individual married or not - unless they spend it on joint assets (example a good extension)

Maybe the woman needs to get away and sees this as an escape route or maybe after years of controlling behaviour she wants something of her own.

I'd say it's end destination is planned for a secret running away account as someone has already guessed.
