Small claims court

Hi. My friend and her ex have just sold their home which they have both been living in. They had overpaid massively on their electricity bill (in both names). The credit has been paid to her ex but he is refusing to pay over half to her. I suggested the small claims court. Is this the best way? Also if so, does she need to send a letter before claim? Many thanks

Forgot to mention they were both paying half the bills before sale if that makes a difference …

Small claims court is the only route if she wants to use the courts. Yes, she needs to send a letter before action.
