Not sure if this is the right place to post? A while back my partner brought a new van from someone online. After about 6 months the van went in for work in a garage which resulted in us getting a knock at the door being to the van was in fact STOLEN!!! we had no idea. It was on different plates plus I had brought my partner a personalised sentimental plate. Long story short the van was not returned to us but with no further action as there was proof we didn’t know. Unfortunately I’m now stuck as to how to get the private plates on another vehicle when that vehicle has been destroyed? Any help would be appreciated. Thankyou

Can you put the plates on retention or on your car temporarily?

So you managed to get a V5 in your name with cloned plate right? Then you assigned the private plate using that V5. Did you then get a new V5 with the private plate on? Is so do you still have it? What was the status of the cloned van? The plate will have been assigned to the van that was cloned, not the stolen one you had. Sounds like a right mess, you could ask DVLA for help but the chances of getting the plate back are minimal.

Hi so when the van got taken they took the v5 etc. The v5 was in the personal plates and they have destroyed the vehicle under the personal plates! It’s very confusing

Hmm, when you bought the van let’s say it was on reg ABC123 which belonged to another vehicle and the real identity of the van was XYZ456. Did you get the V5 in ABC123 and then use that to assign the personalised plate? The only way the van could’ve been scrapped with the personalised plate was if you had the V5 with XYZ456.
