Notice on periodic tenancy

Hello, I am renting and originally signed an assured shorthold tenancy agreement which has expired. It has been rolling/periodic since then. I was told previously that "the terms of a periodic tenancy means that the tenant must give one months’ notice to vacate in line with the monthly rent date". However, I've since been told I can give one months' notice at any time and this does not need to be in line with the monthly rent date. Is this correct?

On a side note does this also mean that the original assured shorthold tenacy agreement is not valid or that we should be following everything in it except for notice periods (which state 2 months)?

Hi, have you got an update on your situation?

I am trying to leave my tenancy 4 months earlier than planned. The letting agent was pretty useless. I'm still waiting for the landlord to give me his feedback about me wanting to leave early.
