Neighbours video door bell

The people who live across the green from me have a video door bell.

If you can imagine 2 sets of semis opposite eachother with a green in between and the road at the end of the green.

I've noticed when ever I walk out of my house, or start walking to my house from my car, their video doorbell security light thing turns on (it's very bright)

This is making me feel really uncomfortable that every time I come or go or have visitors etc they're being alerted to it and even recorded.

Is there anything I can do? The man has threatened my son previously and I've had to report them to the police previously for harassment.

Their immediate neighbour has had a problem that a conversation she had with someone on her doorstep was listened in to and she had abuse shouted at her about it.

It's like being watched all the time

I doubt it picks up that far. You could ask them to check the field of view and adjust it to only pick up their path.

The problem is they're very intimidating I don't feel I can ask.

It's just odd the sensor goes off every time. There's only 4 houses and a v quiet rd on the green

In Fairness, they could sit and look out of the window and see you coming and going just as easily, but you wouldn't be aware. At least now you know not to do anything you don't want them seeing....

Problem is there is nothing you can do about it without some confrontation.

They should only film their premises or have to complie with rules around cctv. But to enforce you will have to speak to them.

He can't control the layout of the road you live on. People have ring doorbells, there's absolutely nothing you can do, other than stop being so paranoid thinking he's the slightest bit interested in you coming back from Asda

Yes there is - ring doorbells have a cumtom field you can set to exclude neighbors. Theres shoudnt go off when you leave your house - there field is set too wide. Ask community police / neighbourhood watch to intervene, for you and his other neighbor.

I agree without speaking to them it's hard, but they're horrible people and as I said quite intimidating.

I was thinking last night that it must also go off when kids play on the green too - that's even worse I suppose

That’s not a useful comparison. People don’t sit and watch from their houses all day long but a Ring doorbell will literally pick up every movement so the owner can record your every move. It’s hugely invasive.

Do you also find CCTV in every street, shop, office premises invasive? What do you think your neighbour is going to do with the footage? Do you even know it’s being recorded (you have to pay a subscription to be able to retrieve a debit save videos from a Ring doorbell, if you don’t they just alert you to movement).

@VanCleefArpels not every street has cctv though. And even if it did it's not pointed at every house and activated when a resident does something.

In shops is different - I'm in someone's business

Mumsnet recommends ring doorbells to everyone, usually when people have trouble with their neighbours.
Maybe that's why your neighbours have installed one.
What was your son doing to be threatened by them? What did the police do when you reported that he had been threatened?

@PAFMO he was putting the Christmas tree to the kerb ready for collection by the council. It was windy and so he put it between recycling bags and the neighbour came out of his house, grabbed my son and told him he can't touch the recycling bag

The police told the neighbour to calm down, get in his house and if anything similar happened again he would be arrested.

I don't believe there is anything you can do regards them having the ring doorbell. The only thing they are bound by is how they handle data beyond their property line. They need to comply with GDPR, which isn't too difficult. Look on gov.uk.

How far away is their house? I can't imagine a doorbell camera having that large of a sensor.

could you go out the back gate? Or does your entry lead to the front of the house anyway.
Sometimes I go out the back gate to avoid the neighbours.

If your neighbours wanted to (and I appreciate that this is a big if) they could set up a 'privacy zone' on the app. It essentially blacks out the selected area.

I have one that covers my opposite neighbours driveway because I don't want notifications every time they move, and I respect their privacy.
