How to query a lawyer's bill?

I am going through lots of legal proceedings at the moment which is costing me a fortune.

I have just received the latest bill from my lawyer which included a lengthy email exchange with my ex, which was completely pointless- my ex was clearly time wasting- and now I'm being charged hundreds of pounds for it.

There are a few other points I don't agree with- like a few hundred pounds for reading his emails which were sent between myself and my barrister when my lawyer was out of the office. I don't agree with this because we resolved the matter between us - so I didn't particularly require her to read all the emails a few days later.

Are these reasonable things I could query?

Finally she always says don't worry about the money as we are making a costs order against my ex. Can I legitimately say I can't pay the bill until I receive my costs from him?

I know they don't like that - but at the same time I don't actually have the money.

What do you think?

You can always query it but it sounds like she's spent the time. On the contact with your ex, what are you suggesting she should have done? On the emails with your barrister, you copied her so she had to read them. Maybe she didn't need to take action but how could she know that without reading the emails plus you copied her which suggests you wanted her to have visibility on the exchange.
