Shoddy Building Work

I had some shoddy building work done and it needs to be redone. The tradesman has offered to rectify but I don't want him back as I don't trust him at all. I brought the defects to his attention fairly immediately so had not yet paid for the works. Do I have to pay for the works if I don't give him the opportunity to rectify?

Yes, you do although you may be able to claim the cost of fixing the work from him.

Is there a process I need to follow? It was not an overly expensive job - £650. It was maximum one days worth or work and not much in materials I don't think. I can't imagine he'd give me any money back to rectify it if I did go ahead and pay him which as I said, I haven't done yet,
