Update on our Inheritance Act Claim following Mediation

I've posted several times about my relative who was effectively disinherited under their spouse's will. Relatively long marriage with 2 DC from spouse's first marriage.

Anyway, the Will left 20% to my relative and the rest to the DCs. Handwritten, ambiguous wording and was challenged over a year ago. The 20% would have purchased a 1 bed flat, and would have meant leaving a 4 bed house.

Mediation took place on Friday (Mediator was a rottweiller disguised as a poodle), and the end result was the estate (mainly house (circa £450,000 value)) was divided into thirds, but a life interest created for relative to live in a 3 bed house for life under a trust arrangement. DRel sad to leave their home of 10 years, but will be housed without rent or mortgage for life, and can leave their own DCs something when they die.

Legal fees are horrendous as the meeting went on until 8pm but a few home truths delivered and had a good result in the end.

Thank you if you have read this far. Resounding vote for mediation.

Was this your Brother OP? Very glad to hear this has mostly been resolved

Great news! I've followed your threads though never had anything useful to add, but your relative has been treated very shoddily and I'm glad there has been some redress.

I remember your thread. This sounds like a fair and reasonable outcome to me, and thank you for the update.
