Deed poll?

Posted this on another topic but feel it fits best here

Me and my partner are planning to get married, and had plans to join our surnames together.
Plan was to change his by deedpol and then us get married and I take his name, which would be the joined surname.
I've read a few sites that want to charge £30+ to do it! But then I've also seen a site that gives you the template to do it for free!
My question is if we do it ourselves will places really accept this? Bank, utilities, driving licence, work place? Will they take our document as legit or because it's not 'stamped' or got a 'serial number' will we have trouble?

I did it myself with a template that was witnessed. I have had no problems at all with anything, driving licence, passport etc all changed.

How was your bank with the change?

The bank was fine. I seem to remember I just had to take the form in and fill in whatever the change forms they had.
I did it about 10 years ago. Occasionally I have to use it, when I applied for a mortgage but honestly I've never had any issue.
I used a template, I may have paid about a fiver for it- but I have since seen free ones when I helped a friend do it.

Neither of you should need any documentation other than the marriage certificate. See this Government explanation on Change of Name in the UK.

Never pay!

As were meshing our surname together he will need to change by deed poll then I'll take his 'new name' upon marriage

What do you mean by meshing? Double barrelling or using the letters to create a new name altogether?

TabbyMcTatBuskersCat · 28/03/2022 07:28

Don't pay. I've changed mine and my childrens for free.

You dont need to deedpoll.
