Vehicle tax at post office?

My MiL died last year and we have been waiting for probate etc. In the meantime we took her car and sent off for a V5C so we could tax it. This was about 5 weeks ago. Today we got clamped for being untaxed and paid the fine but to get refunded for the surety we need to tax the vehicle in 15 days. Phoned DVLA and they say they have not received the application (including £25 postal order). I was told I can just go into the post office and tax the car immediately. Has anyone ever done this?

Yes you can but not all post office branches do vehicle tax.

NumberTheory · 16/03/2022 06:26

You can find branches that do here: www.postoffice.co.uk/default/identity/vehicle-tax#branchfinder

Can you tax it without the V5C?
DVLA told me I can’t so I need to send off for a new one

That's my point. We sent off for the V5C. Weeks ago. The DVLA have not got it (they say). So what can I do to tax the car in 15 days? The DVLA advised going to the post office.

Do you have a V11 (the reminder to pay) or V5C/2 (the new keeper slip)? If so, that is all you need. You can also tax the vehicle at the Post Office with a V62 (application for a V5C).

I taxed mine at the post office a couple of years ago, when I couldn't do it online because Swansea hadn't received the right paperwork from the log book.

Just try it and see.

Hoppinggreen · 16/03/2022 17:02

Oh I see
I am in a (sort of ) similar position.
I have had my car tax on DD for years but I now I have changed bank accounts I have to set up a new one but can’t without the reminder (which I won’t get apparently because I was on DD) or the V5C, which I have no idea where that is as I bought the car 10 years ago
According to the DVLA when I eventually got through I have to send off for a new V5C for £25 and wait for that to arrive
If I could just do it at the PO using the reg that would be great

Thanks all. We could not find any paperwork at all for the car in my late MiL's house and we looked everywhere! No V5C, MOT documents, insurance, nothing ConfusedI am just going to have to go to the PO and try with the paperwork we have. If that doesn't work I'll have to phone the DVLA and ask what they suggest we should do.

Swansea must have a record of the registered keeper.

Hoppinggreen · 16/03/2022 18:09

@RustyHalloween
If you do manage to do it at The PO without the V5C I would be very grateful if you could come back and let me know

Of course Hopping Smile
