Airbnb damage claim

I will try to keep this brief

Group of us stayed in an Airbnb, and one person spilt a bottle of red wine on their bed.

Host has raised a request for extra money, which IMO is hugely inflated (think hundreds of pounds to replace poor quality bedding).

There was no security deposit. From what I've read, we can refuse to pay anything, or offer a different sum. If we don't meet the full amount of the request (which we definitley won't because it is bloody extortionate) what happens next? Can airbnb compel us to make a further payment?

Any advice would be greatly received!

Too many variables...

How much was the place to rent (if it cost a fortune I'd think they can factor in replacing something)

The thing that got "ruined"...is it really or could it be cleaned/washed?

Have you read the small print and does it say anything in there about damage to property and what's expected?

When I say what got ruined I mean was it just the sheets or did the wine soak into the mattress (tbf they should have protectors on)

Tontostitis · 08/03/2022 08:18

I'd want a new mattress. A whole bottle of red won't come out and the smell will be awful. I'd expect to pay at least £600 to cover the mattress.

Oh I dont disagree that it needs replacing - and the mattress was affected - but this was a very low quality single bed. The type I had in uni halls or a hostel

I'm inclined to go back to the host and ask for proof of costs as he is saying it's all under a year old (bollocks) so we can make an informed offer. Prior to this we had raised a request for a partial refund as the listing was misleading (one less bedroom, sofa beds instead of beds etc) so I think he is playing silly buggers in retaliation

Ask to see invoices for the items for what they are asking. If you are not happy, offer what you think you should pay and deduct an amount for the lack of bedroom and sofabeds.

Did you take photos of the mattress and bedding?

I guess they can claim for the time taken to find the new mattress and bedding. Also, is it possible that they are charging for lost income? Might the have had to cancel a booking?
