Jailed for grooming? *Trigger warning*

I’m concerned about some information I’ve heard. Need to be careful of details to protect my own anonymity

Friend A has told me friend B’s BF has previously been in prison for grooming a 15 yo. She believes when he was at uni, but actual age unknown.

Friend B is currently pregnant, and because of prison sentence, Social Services are now involved.

Friend B has insisted BF didn’t have sex with victim, it was pictures, he’s innocent etc etc.

Friend A doesn’t believe a word. Friend B hasn’t told anyone until now, because of SS, despite being with BF for 2 years.

Friend A has now told me and I’m likely to find out this weekend directly from friend B (if she tells me, due to meet up for lunch).

Bf isn’t my cup of tea. I’d describe him as odd, quiet. Snippets of things previously have made me dislike him.

I’ve exhausted my Google searching skills to try and find any history on him though. His social media doesn’t exist pre 2019 (around time he got together with friend) and I don’t know if his name is different and his current name is common (think Andrew Jones obviously not his name). I can find one article that’s potentially him, but age and location doesn’t seem right. It’s made me feel sick just reading what that person has done, I can’t keep searching and reading these awful things.

Can someone be sentenced on grooming alone? No rape or coerced consent? I assumed not. It makes me think he’s done something worse that sending pictures (which is bad I’m itself to a 15yo).

How can I find out more about BF’s prison sentence?

What a mess. I don’t think friend B thinks it’s a big thing, but for me this has red flags all over it 😔

Friend B should make enquiry under the Child Sex Offender Disclosure Scheme, or maybe Clare's Law. But you as a third party will not be able to. I would encourage her to though for the sake of her baby to find out the unvarnished truth.

Yes. Sexual communication with a child is an offence which can result in a prison sentence of up to 2 years. Meeting a child following grooming is a more serious offence which can lead to a sentence of up to 7 years. Neither offence requires any actual sexual activity beyond grooming.

Thank you both, that’s really helpful.
