I am seeking urgent legal advice following safeguarding failures we have experienced at an independent school. Any recommendations for legal specialists?

Why would you not report the matter to the safeguarding team at the appropriate local authority? I would start with this. What about the schools safeguarding policy? Who should be dealing with the allegation at school? Has the matter been disclosed to them? A lawyer seems a dramatic first step.
