If I buy my own place but am not yet divorced could my ex stake a claim to it?

Until you get the court approved financial consent order yes it is at risk.

I was told it will be divided too for the same question I asked. If you are selling your joint property to settle separately then make sure you both have this in writing that this would be considered as your own mo ey and not to be shared.
