Water servitude/rights advice please

Hello, I was hoping someone could advise us please.

We have been using our private water supply for years, with a few hiccups here and there leaving us without water for days at a time. So recently we have had the opportunity to join into Scottish Mains Water, through a developer at a building by site further up our lane.

We do not own the lane, and have shared access of it.

The developer has quoted £7500 for laying a water pipe for us, and connecting us to the water mains. The owner of the field has quoted at least £6500 for a water servitude right, so a total of over £14000.

Does anyone know anything about water servitude rights?

I was speaking to the developer who had told me the quote for the connection, and told her I would let her know if we decided to proceed, as at that point I hadn't had the quote for the servitude rights.

However today I have had an invoice through for the connection, despite me not saying we accepted the quote or not.

In a bit of a quandary, thank you for any advice.
