Hire car accident

About 2 months ago I had an altercation with a bollard. I hadn't seen it on a corner and took it too tight. Completely my fault. The damage was superficial. It was a hire car and thankfully I had paid a waiver. I paid the smaller excess and moved on. Today I had a call from the car hire company to come sort some insurance documents out. Surely this should have been done at the time or shouldn't be my responsibility. I've never had this before. Just after some advice. Sorry if this is in the wrong place.

Can't really advise knowledably on this specifically. I had an accident in a hire car a looong time ago and I never had any admin to do beyond having to pay the excess (which I hadn't waivered). So alarm bells are ringing here a bit.

At a guess - I would advise against going physically to the hire car place - they are likely to be intending to put pressure on you to sign or pay for something that you would realise you weren't obligated to do if you were given sufficient time and distance to consider what they are asking for. It could just be that the waiver insurance has terms and conditions that they need to establish more details about the incident before they can process the claim' and it's fair enough that you should cooperate with that within reason, but there's nothing involved in that which can't reasonably be achieved over the phone or by post. So tell them to send you the paperwork and phone you if there's any further discussion needed, but you have no obligation to go to them in person and shouldn't do so.

Be cautious about what you sign/agree to. Take it all to Citizens Advice if anything seems dodgy.
