Is this a Rogue company?

We have a broken glass door in our house. It’s one of those bi folding type doors. I took ages to find a company that could fix it but eventually I found one. The chap came round in July to measure the door and to measure depth etc and said they will send the measurements to their factory in Europe because ace door is custom made. We were asked for full payment upfront because of this. We paid by bank transfer.
Chap said due to recent problems in that part of Europe extreme weather related, lead time will be September before we receive new door installed. Fine. Didn’t hear anything further, by end of September I contacted them and was told delays have continued but they are certain it’ll be ready mid October as they could see no further reason for a delay.
I just received an email just now saying, there are further delays and the door isn’t expected till mid November.

This is the short version as in between, I’ve made phone calls chasing up for an update and as they have not contacted me since the visit to do measurements. I mentioned at my last call that I’m might have to ask for a refund as we’ve been waiting so long, to which I was told ‘that’s impossible!’.
Have I been scammed? What can I do at this point?

I think you have been scammed. You should never pay upfront. I would contact the police and your banks fraud department. Maybe call trading standards too. You have a paper trail. Are they claiming to be based in the UK. You can check them on Companies House register.

They are on companies register. I’ve they’ve filed all their accounts.

We have been waiting since Marvh for a new front door, ordered, but not paid for.

Apparently there are massive delays in the factory getting panels and the colour.

Perhaps they are genuine and are struggling to get the glass.

I don’t suggest this, but a few years ago my parents had a new front door fitted. All paid for. On the day of fitting the ornate glass wasn’t ready do they said it would be ready next week. The time came and went, df chased. Two months later df was driving past a house and it was the guy who sold him the door. He had a distinctive car and private number plate. He knocked on the door and ‘enquired’ about the glass for the door. Funnily enough they came out next day to fit it.

@MrMrsJones Tobe honest its not so much the length of time but their complete and utter failure to make any contact. Each time I’ve also told them to put their update in writing they have conveniently forgotten to do so until my last phone when I really gave them a piece of my mind. Then they emailed today.

Given the supply issues going on at the moment and the check you did on companies house, they are probably just rubbish rather than con artists. I know that still doesn't get you to doors though.

Menahari · 20/10/2021 19:40

@Usuallyhappycamper That thought’s encouraging. I really don’t want to have to start an investigation, I just want my door fixed. Are there general supply issues going on at the moment? is this EU Brexit related across all industries?

There are supply issues around the world for many industries. Brexit hasn’t helped, but it’s not the only factor. Covid and increased demand, along with 20+ years of underinvestment in labour markets in some key areas, has left global trade in a bit of a shaky state. But things are moving, they’re just taking time.

TrollsAreSaddos · 23/10/2021 18:08

How about asking them if they can return the money and you pay by credit card instead. Not sure how that would work in practice but if you were able to do it then you would have credit card protection.

Ginqueen456 · 23/10/2021 18:24

I work in this industry and the lead times for everything at the moment are ridiculously long so i wouldn't assume he's scamming you, just a bit crap at communication.

LemonTT · 23/10/2021 23:10

I have waited very long periods for goods from Europe and as well as bespoke British goods (that presumably rely on products from Europe).

I think this is just a feature of the market and supply chains. I don’t think the companies are able to provide updates because they just don’t know.
