Hello I am hoping someone can help me

I paid a wedding venue in Greece over 2000 euros and they have since went bankrupt.

I have tried emailing them over 3 weeks and they just kept saying they were busy and would get back to me. They never did. I tried calling and messaging.

I never knew they had went bankrupt until my wedding planner over there went to the venue and it was boarded up and for sale. They didn't even have the decency to let me know.

I sent a final message insisting they refund me within 24 hours or I would be posting on the popular Facebook forum they are part of.

The admin of that forum has not accepted the post onto the forum, however messaged me to say they would contact them.

Since she contacted them they replied telling me they had went bankrupt and would make small payments every month. They also threatened me with lawyers because I threatened to post about them.

Can anyone tell me if they can actually sue me for posting MY OPINION and experience of a company on a forum? I am absolutely livid.

I doubt they are going to actually pay me back. So I am out of pocket but also can't warn any other brides about them. This can't be correct surely?

The venue is in Greece

Please can someone advise me on what to do next?

Thank you!

I think its going to be difficult to advise as to the best plan of action as Greek law is different to the laws in England and Wales.
If a company has gone bankrupt here you have to fill a proof of debt form provided by the Trustee in Bankruptcy and if there are any assets you may get your money back, or a fraction of it, or none at all!

I would speak to a solicitor who can provide the right advice as to your options
Good luck!

Did you buy a wedding insurance policy (highly recommended if you are planning to get married abroad). If not, you are very unlikely to get your money back. You will just be added to a very long list of creditors.

sv699 · 25/08/2021 09:05

Thank you both for your response

Unfortunately I couldn't take out insurance as due to COVID there were nobody taking on policies.

I'm passed caring about the money now, it's a lot to lose but it's a lesson learned.

I'm more concerned about being able to warn other brides about the company, but they are threatening me with their lawyers if I post on the Facebook page.

Tbh their FB page is probably monitored by admin or something similar which means your post won't be made public.

If they have indeed gone bankrupt and you choose to post those factual points somewhere, there's not a lot they can do as you are not being slanderous/untruthful. Just be careful what you write

HollowTalk · 25/08/2021 09:36

Did you pay with a credit card?

sv699 · 25/08/2021 09:36

If I copy the message here could someone tell me the parts they could say were slanderous?

@HollowTalk

Did you pay with a credit card?
Yes through transferwise, which now I realise was absolutely stupid!

I'm passed the point of caring about getting the money back - it's a expensive lesson learned

I just want to warn other people about it without being sued.

If the company is bankrupt what is there to warn about. They will have stopped trading.

Some part of you must recognise that being bankrupt means they are going through a distressing period. They have lost a business and income due to an unprecedented global pandemic. What exactly is it that you want

EloiseHawking · 25/08/2021 20:55

Why are absolutely livid?

What can they do? They have gone bankrupt in a pandemic. Booking a wedding in Greece at the moment was always going to be somewhat risky.

Of course they don't want you posting negatively about them on social media. No other brides will be able to book with them as they are bankrupt.

They are trading under a different company.

Yeh that is sad for them and I sympathise.

However being threatened for giving my honest review of them is not the way they should be handling it.

I'm not asking for opinions on what I think of them
Going bankrupt. I'm asking LEGALLY what they can actually do about me giving a factual account of what has happened.
