Can anybody advise on the process for registering/patenting a logo as part of a new business set-up?

Hi there -- patent protection is for inventions - for a logo for you business you would be looking at registering a trade mark - you can look into it here www.gov.uk/how-to-register-a-trade-mark. You don't have to register a trade mark - you can build up some rights in a logo without having to register but a registered trade mark gives stronger protection. Trade marks are quite complicated - you need to consider which countries you want to register in - what categories to register in and other factors - you would want to check as well that your logo was distinctive enough - there is quite a lot to think about. Personally I would find out as much as you can and then speak to a trade mark lawyer - make sure its a lawyer that specialises in trade marks
