Proof of ID for mortgage application

I have a question that's best explained by example names.

I was born as Jane Smith.

I got married and added my ex's name to mine e.g. Jane Smith Jones. I had to do this by deed poll.

I'm recently divorced and waiting for all my ID documents to be updated e.g. driving license. Apparently, I don't need to apply by deed poll to go back to my birth name (Jane Smith).

But I want to apply for a mortgage and don't have many recent documents in my birth name (including passport/DI). Do you think mortgage brokers/companies will be able to start the application process in the meantime if I show my original deed poll document, marriage certificate and divorce documents (expecting my license back soon but depends on DVLA timings).

Yes you just need to show the contimuum so birth certificate, marriage certificate, deed poll, divorce document in that order show the “history” of how you have been known . They just need to be sure you have been the same person all along

Just type up a change of name deed - there are loads online - and get it witnessed by 2 people. Job done. Send off your DL for a name change, by the time it comes back (not long) is when the mortgage Co will be asking for ID.

Ring utilities now, many did it for me a couple of years ago via email with a copy of my deed attached, will probably be the norm now with covid protocols.

On your mortgage app and credit check they'll ask all your former names anyway. If there is any query the underwriters will want to have a look, but there's a clear paper trail so I wouldn't be concerned.

Thank you, that's a big relief!

I didn't know about the change of name document. Will get my friend who is a solicitor to be one of the witnesses (socially distanced) in that case!

You don't need to pay for a deed poll, it really is simple to do the change of name deed.

Thank you, that's brilliant.
