Neighbour blaming us for blocked drain

rachelmum16 · 07/02/2021 10:53

I have recently moved to a new block and there are issues with the drain. A couple of days ago someone put up a note "can you please stop putting nappies and baby wipes down the toilet..." Now we are the only one with a baby and I promise I have never put anything besides tissues down the toilet wherever I have lived (I can't even imagine how someone can get a nappy down the toilet)
I have met many of the neighbours and they are wonderful but this has really bothered me as I feel that someone as something against us especially that i am different ethnicity.
How do I deal with this?

Where did they put the note? If it was in a public area, then just put another one beside it saying that it's not you.

Yes it was in a public area so many neighbours have already seen it. I think that will be the best option I will write a note.

I am sorry you have been, it seems, almost publicly named.

No one will know exactly who blocked a drain. It could be several people or a fault in the system itself.

I hope your note can set the record straight.

You could add to the note to ask your neighbours not to flush those toilet wipes marketed to adults, nor tampons etc.
Manufacturers sometimes say baby wipes are flushable when they aren’t, in most plumbing arrangements anyway, and the same is true of the other products.

Batinhernightdress · 07/02/2021 20:46

Having spent much of the weekend unblocking my entire house mushed toilet paper does look like baby wipes, I know they are not as we don't use them but I can see why the unblockerer (Grin) thought so. I agree the return note above is a good idea.

Bluesername · 07/02/2021 20:55

Write a follow up and put it underneath their note.

'We never put baby wipes or nappies down the toilet so you can stop blaming us! There are other things which block toilets which could have come from anywhere. Sanitary products, so-called flushable toilet cleaning wipes, personal wipes and incontinence products to name a few. Please think before pointing the finger at any individual.'

No need to get defensive. If you weren’t named in the first note, you don’t need to deny it in the second, just help your neighbours by giving some other examples that could be causing problems.
Hope Bat unblocked ok and their weekend improved..

When my sister and I were young teens, nextbdoor man came round and accused my dad of 'letting us' flush sanitary towels down the loo. He knew it was us because we were 2 sisters of the age.
A) My dad would never have uttered the words period or sanitary towel
B) There were two sisters THE SAME AGE at next door man's house as well.
C) We didn't bloody well flush them.

So do what my parents did and start a silent feud. They literally never spoke again. It went on for 30 years, until my dad died. My mum once spoke to Mrs Nexdoor by mistake in Sainsbury's but never again, until another neighbour's funeral.

Do it. See if you can beat 30 years.

OP take the note down and put up a poster like this:

I think you are being oversensitive.
You weren't named.

It may well be adult nappies (incontinence products) and there are tonnes of types of wipes - face wipes, those moist toilet tissues.

Unless it is a very small block I suspect no one will really know how many children live there - I recently met one of my neighbours by the lift with a buggy - apparently they have lived her for 18months. I didn't have a clue there was a baby in that flat.
