Recommendation for Solicitor for Consent order

Maximusk1 · 25/01/2021 10:14

Hey ,

I have filed for divorced and need a recommendation for a cheaper solicitor to do our consent order.

I have so far been quoted £1000 and £960.

The divorce is pretty much amicable and we know what we want in the order we just need someone to draft it up and make sure we haven't missed anything.

I don't want to use one of those quickie divorce places. Even their prices are great the reviews are crap.

Thanks

Where are you? One local would be handy.

I don't think they are solicitors.

I had mine "drawn up" by a local solicitor.
It was actually a number of years post separation, we'd agreed the split of assets between us and dealt with the transfer of deeds on the house (unmortgaged so easier) and transfer of cash etc. Neither of us had much of a pension at the time we separated (and neither of us felt we had a call on the others assets after that point).
Its about 6 years ago, I was quoted £250+VAT on the phone, after the meeting she only charged me £150+VAT as she said it was so straight forward.
(I was staggered, it would have probably cost half of that to process anti-ML paperwork, never mind drafting the actual consent order.)

@Familylawsolicitor

You’re not going to get a solicitor who will do it cheaper. They have to advise you on it, not just draw it up. I have had to untangle issues caused by crap consent orders from online firms and that costs thousands.
We do them from £866. Though that doesn't include advice on whether it's the best deal for them. Although to be fair, most people aren't looking to get advice on that. They already think it's a fair deal.

I have called a local solicitor today & was quoted £500 plus VAT. It seems like a lot of money when my ex & I agree. I was hoping to find something cheaper but maybe that’s the going price for a consent order without any complications.

Average charging rate round here is £250 per hour plus VAT, so £500 sounds about right.

They have to meet you, talk to the other side, read the docs, eg pension statements, share statements, draft the order, go over it with you, supply to the other side for approval, amend as necessary, draw up the financial statement, read the other side’s financial statement, discuss with you, submit to court, Chase/field any enquiries, obtain and check the order, supply it to you, and deal with any queries/chasing as necessary.

Two hours work is a pretty good deal.
