Redundancy process - provisionally redundant not at risk

Hi,

I dont want to give too many details as these things are confidential, but I wanted to check legal requirements around redundancy process.

Is it legal to tell someone they were part of a redundancy pool, and not successful on the day they were put at risk? Then have a short period to find an alternative role in the company.

If this is not legal, can anyone point me to the law? From googling this looks like bad practice but not sure if that counts for anything.

Thanks!
