Gym membership

I have a David Lloyd gym membership with a monthly direct debit. When Coronavirus hit I cancelled the direct debit attached. Now they’ve reopened they are chasing me for that direct debit. Does anyone know where I stand? I’m not going to the gym. I don’t feel it’s safe and I have been shielding a vulnerable child by social distancing and limiting contact as much as possible. Any advice please? Thanks

I’m in the same boat. Lots of people have been able to freeze their membership until the end of October I’ve now found out.

Did you give notice that you were going to cancel, you need to advise them before you cancel your dd. If you did and paid the notice period they haven't got a leg to stand on

Most gyms frozen memberships as they weren't able to open

Now they are able to open you should be paying - it's your choice not to go now.

Unless you gave the appropriate written notice in line with the terms of your membership you are still a member. You cannot cancel your membership by simply cancelling the direct debit. As the previous poster says, now they are open again you must pay. The fact that you choose not to go is irrelevant.

My gym refunded my whole annual membership - I’d taken it out then lockdown hit. They froze all memberships then wrote to offer me additional months to cover the closure period when they opened up again. I said that I wasn’t confident in going back into the gym and could I have my membership cancelled and a refund - and they agreed and refunded the whole thing. Ditto with a series of private exercise classes I’d booked elsewhere that I had no idea when I’d ever get to use them.

Put in writing what you’d like them to do. Pause or cancel?
