Housing element of UC when sharing with earning partner

DD is going to be moving to a new city with her partner. At the moment she receives UC but has left her previous accommodation and is staying with us for a while, so she’s not getting the housing element.

When she moves in with her partner, who has variable earnings as he’s self-employed, will she still be able to claim the housing element of UC? We can’t find any information about it anywhere. Thanks in advance!

When she moves in with her partner it'll be a joint claim and both their earning will be taken into account when working out the household entitlement for UC. So it will depend on the household income as to whether the housing element will be paid.

Would it not need to be a joint claim?

yes, it will be a joint claim and there is a good chance that she may not qualify for any UC payments at all. She should put the figures including his earnings through the entitled to calculator and they need to have a serious talk about expectations for bills etc BEFORE she makes the move, because she cannot be expected to contribute 50% if her incoming amount h=is much smaller than her partners, and are they likely to want to pool all their money / support her should she lose all entitlement to any UC?
Im assuming she is looking to get a job.
